Enriching lives through participation in music
Linda Jacoby has witnessed the benefits of music therapy with children for over twenty years, and has continuously advocated to employ a music therapist at least twice each month for over ten years specifically at the Cedar Valley Preschool and Child Care Center (CVPCCC). Recognizing that some children may struggle to readjust to the structured schedule of CVPCCC’s programming after COVID-19 caused the center to close for over two months, Linda wanted additional music sessions once they reopened June 1. Trauma and stress impact learning, and we know that a student who is under stress (i.e., from a change in routine during COVID-19 shutdown) cannot achieve their highest potential. By diminishing stress, learning is better enabled.
Linda has seen how participation in music can combat both stress and trauma and support wellness by providing a unifying structure, enhancing positive emotions, bridging the disconnect of social distancing, providing a nonverbal means of communication, and increasing critical thinking.
So I masked up, held music sessions outside with the children six feet from me as much as possible, limited materials to washable scarves and egg shakers that we had multiple quantities of, and eliminated loud singing so as to limit saliva propulsion. My efforts were met with abundant smiles of joy and contentment from the children. I am so glad to be face to face with participants again.
