Frequently Asked Questions

Typically, music therapy sessions take place on a weekly basis, but it depends on the needs of the client. Sometimes every other week is a successful option.

We're happy to come to you! Some West Music locations do have space in the store, and you are welcome to come to us if that works better for you.

If your child is on the Medicaid Waiver and has access to Consumer Choice Options funds that will sometimes help with the cost of music therapy services.  We are in the process of advocating for more funding options, but at the moment most of our clients pay privately for services.

If your need is for some recreational music or entertainment once a month, it's really better if you find a performer or entertainer to suit that need.

We do all kinds of things in music therapy!  It really depends on the outcomes you’re looking for.  We might take turns playing a drum, count or identify the color of egg shakers, play musical games, or read a book.  We might use music as relaxation or help create personalized playlists.  Sometimes we do lyric analysis or write songs or use songs to prompt life review.  It really depends on the client/clients and the needs we’re trying to address.

We work on things like communication skills, academic skills, interpersonal/social skills, coping skills, pain or anxiety management, self-expression, or motor skills during music therapy.

You don’t need any talent or skill to benefit from music therapy services.  You just have to enjoy music enough to be motivated by it.

Singing isn’t typically a goal of music therapy, but you’re always welcome to sing along!

Music therapy is for anybody who has a challenge in life and is motivated to work on it through music.  We serve people of every age and ability level.

A music therapist may be needed instead of a musician if you’re looking for non-musical outcomes and personalized engagement.

You sure can. Please find whatever ways you can to enjoy your music!!  But it’s not the same as music therapy sessions where we’re focused on non-musical outcomes.

A music therapist may be needed instead of a teacher if the student isn’t able to pay attention or follow directions for the duration of a lesson, or if different techniques and styles of engagement are necessary to facilitate learning.

It's Our 30th Anniversary!

In 1994, West Music hired its first music therapist, becoming one of only a handful of music retailers to offer this service. We are deeply proud of our music therapists - their commitment to enriching lives through participation in music has had a positive impact on so many people over the years.

Join us in our mission of enriching lives through participation in music by donating to make music therapy services financially accessible to local individuals.
