Enriching lives through participation in music
As Valentine's Day is nearing, one of our therapists shares how familiar love songs can have a positive impact around Valentine's Day!
Valentine’s Day is surrounding us as we go into stores. We see chocolate, flowers, cards, and of course the classic colors of red and pink. One of my favorite things about Valentine’s Day is using love songs to connect with patients, especially in the hospice setting. Getting to hear patients share their love stories is always so special.
As music therapists, we can help bring back memories through the music. This may be playing a song from a person's wedding, a song they used to dance to, or a song that makes them remember a loved one.
While preparing for the Valentine’s season I looked at my personal music and picked out my top 5 go to love songs to use during this time of year.

I Will Always Love You (Whitney Houston or Dolly Parton)
You're My Best Friend (Queen)
Build Me Up Buttercup (The Foundations)
All You Need is Love (The Beatles)
L-O-V-E (Nat King Cole)
All of these songs talk about love, but they all resonate love in various ways. It may be showing love between a couple - whether they be newlyweds or celebrating 50 years of marriage. It may also show love between two friends, a grandparent and their grandchildren, or parents with a newborn baby.
Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love all around us.
