Enriching lives through participation in music
Spring is here! And with it comes a plethora of songs and activities! Flowers, birds, and my favorite: Sunshine! Think about how many songs you know that have the word “sun” or “sunshine” or “sunny” in the title alone! Here are the first ones that come to my mind:
And let’s not forget songs that mention it in the lyrics:
The list is endless!
My favorite song to bring into sessions this time of year is “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. It has easy parts for singing along, and repetition that can be coordinate with instruments.
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun, and I say:
IT’S ALRIGHT!
I particularly like to bring shiny or star-shaped tambourines to provide the idea of sunshine. I teach everybody the end of the chorus, where the whole group can call out “IT’S ALRIGHT!”
When we reach the part where the lyrics say “Sun, sun, sun – here it comes!” participants are invited to match the music with their tambourines. The first sun is up high, the second in the middle, the third one down low. We do it multiple times and then return to the chorus.
What’s your favorite sunshine song or activity?
