I was working with a speech therapist the other day and she wanted our client to work on the /j/ phoneme, and what better way to get our client to practice the phoneme multiple times than in the context of a song. Being that it is the holiday season I immediately thought of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The speech therapist picked out 12 picture cards and laid them out on a table, all with the /j/ sound somewhere in the word. I started singing our song:

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me: a juggler and a joker in a jam.

On the second day Christmas my true love gave to me: 2 pigeons, and a juggler and a joker in a jam.

On the third day of Christmas…

By following this pattern with 12 different picture cards we had our client practicing her /j/ sound 102 times. Pretty good for one song!
